For many people it probably is.
I've had this knife for nine years now, and I also have a full set of Global knives, but this little beauty is the one I reach for most often.
Why?
Because it is superbly sharp,lightweight in the hand and well balanced. Unlike those huge kitchen knives you see on tv cooking programmes,this knife is small enough to be easily manipulated, but large enough to tackle all routine kitchen duties. The 5" blade is long enough for almost all kitchen tasks, but short emough to give the user complete control.
Like all Global knives the GS 3 is SHARP !!!. Try chopping up vegetables, or slicing tomatoes or potatoes. The knife just glides through as if the veges were cooked.
This superb Japanese knife is streets ahead of European knives.
To maintain the blade, I recommend using a ceramic sharpening rod, made by Global (or Kyocera, which is cheaper). Every few months the blade will need resharpening. You can do this yourself, using Japanese waterstones (King, or Shapton,or Norton in grit sizes 1000 up to 8000) and cheap Mino Sharp guides to maintain the edge angle (check my other reviews for more details).
If you can't be bothered doing this yourself, take it to a competent expert knife sharpener and tell him you need a 12 to 15 degree angle on the edge.
addendum:- since writing this review I have purchased other Japanese kitchen knives from japanesechefsknivesdotcom, and the Hiromoto AS carbon steel knives are even better.

This knife is amazing. It seems like gravity itself carries the knife to the cutting board, gently cutting anything in its path. Chopping chili or bell peppers is made so easy with the sharp blade and well-designed weight of the knife. I was informed when researching Globals for my own use that they are balanced perfectly and designed in the manner of Japanese samurai swords. The handles are forged with the blades, but dimpled for an interesting and comfortable grip. All Global knives are made with the same consideration and engineering.
If you are hesitant to order such an expensive knife online without checking the grip out for yourself, visit a Sur La Table or Williams-Sonoma store to see Global knives in person. One benefit to order knives online, especially as a wedding gift is that they do not have to be transported via commercial airplane.
These knives are worth the extra work it is to hand wash and dry.

This is our 3rd version of this same unit (1st one sold w. house...second burned out after 11 years of continuous use! This newest of this Sharp line is very good looking, beautiful Stainless throughout & larger (inside) then previous units...it has really simplified convection & mix cooking with help of it's internal computer. This is great for all of your cooking, especially cooking for 2, we never use the regular oven except for a large turkey (this unit will hold a 10# bird.) There was a problem with one of the large bolts that holds it on the back plate..did not line up correctly...that was a pain. Also shipping by UPS or FED EX ends up with a mutilated box & I'm sure damaged units (we lucked out no damage to unit- the unit is quite heavy 84# so I'm sure the carrier just "heaves" it - so if your box is badly damaged don't even open it - send it back for a new one) they should really be shipped using another source.

The single best pots for doing rich chicken dishes and the like. Conducts heat perfectly, well-balanced and very easly to clean. So many great meals have emerged from these pots that I tend to cook more frequently, especially the more slow-cooking or complex dishes.
I inheirited one of these pots and then bought another. Since then I have excused all similar imitations from the kitchen.
If I had to equipt my kitchen with 3 cooking pots/pans, this would come right after the skillet and sauce pan.

I was given this knife as a birthday gift six months ago. It is absolutely wonderful! Perfectly balanced, sharp, and nice to look at. The fact that it is so well balanced makes it extremely easy to use. Slicing watermelon or cutting sweet potatoes requires hardly any effort any more! All I have to do is let the knife do the work. Chopping vegetables for a tomato sauce is a cinch with this knife. I have a large family and it is not unusual that I have to prepare dinner for 12 to 15 people and this knife has made it easy for me. I intend to get a full set of these knives eventually. In my opinion, there is no comparison to my Sabatier chef's knife.

These scales are the third set I have bought to weigh myself. I am a big guy (360) & these are the first that will weigh me the same two times in a row. Yes, they do kind of have a small space to stand on but I believe it makes them more accurate. If you weigh too much in pounds you can always switch them to kilos & weigh half as much! The other scales I tried would not weigh the same twice in a row & they sounded like they were breaking to pieces when I stepped on them.
If your big like me I can recommend these scales.

I bought this knife only because I had a gift card and have a discount at a certain culinary-related store for being in the industry. Needless to say, it's a rather good yanagi, but just rather good.
It's definitely overpriced at $108+ since the steel (56-58rc), while still being harder than German (52-56rc) knives, is still softer than some other stainless yanagi (60rc) at the same price. Ok, you can get carbon steel, but some of us don't want to maintain one. It's even harder to maintain one when you're a cook whose job is not just to cut fish, but a variety of things all day. Another thing I'll mark this knife down for is that it doesn't have a continuous hollow ground back like most yanagi, but you can just wet the blade with a damp cloth to keep fish from sticking.
DO NOT USE A STEEL ON THIS KNIFE OR ANY SINGLE BEVEL KNIVES. This knife should only be sharpened on a high grit waterstone (6000+) and do not sharpen it only on one side as that'll weaken the edge. Even the box says sharpening it at 70/30, but 80/20 should be fine so long as you're only cutting fish.
If I had to pay full price for this knife, I'll have to give it 3/5 stars because although it's a softer steel and doesn't have a hollow ground back, it's stainless, requires extremely low maintenance for a yanagi, and it's more sanitary than an unsealed Japanese wood handle.

Well, it works great, as advertised. However, it is not the easiest thing to clean. It says you can toss it in the dishwasher (fully assembled, top rack) and that does the trick. It just seems like there are a lot of potential 'missed' spots. So I wash it VERY carefully in a sink of soapy water. A toothbrush works well to get between every little spot.
In fact, I had the 45 blade model and never really felt that it could be cleaned properly. The blades are 'stacked' next to each other in three rows. This smaller model has less blades, but it is a single row, and easier to get at. While it may sound like the more blades the better, it really doesn't take much longer to use this model. That, and it's half the price of the 45 blade unit.

I must say I was a bit skeptical about purchasing these Kitchen Shears...After all, they're definitely one of the cheaper if not cheapest pairs in terms of price that I've seen on Amazon. However, never fear! The scissors work like a charm. I've used them with chicken and other meats with no complaints. Recipe calls for chopped parsley? I get out the scissors and "snip, snip!" The scissors come apart at the hinge so you can stick them in the dishwasher separately and ensure they are fully clean and bacteria-free.
The other features (screwdriver, bottle opener, etc.) are not necessary but can come in handy. The jar opener is not that great if you need to open a large jar, but I didn't buy these scissors to open jars so I still say, five stars!

I have used this pan 4 times, and have finally perfected it on the 4th attempt. I swore that if it stuck on my last attempt that I would through the pan out the window. The first several times I only greased the pan and the cakes stuck 3 of the times. The key is using "Baker's Joy", a cooking spray you can find in your local grocery store or through the Nordicware website. This spray greases and flours in one. I used it last night and my cake literally fell out of the pan--it was wonderful. It also made the pan cleanup 100 times easier. Also, you can only fill the pan 3/4 of the way or it will spill over.

I've been using this tower heater/fan since October and I've had a fairly good experience. It's basically the taller version of the "SPT SH-1508 Tower Ceramic Heater with Ionizer." The SH-1508 was too short for my tall bed and adding an extra foot to the height in the SH-1509 made is ideal. It heats up my mid size room pretty well.
When I first got this product it looked like it was in good condition (the box definitely wasn't though). But it seems that there's a little bit of blurred area on the front inside of the remote control signal receptor. But that area is a black background with a red light covered by the transparent plastic so I can't really tell the blurred plastic cover anymore unless I look closely.
The fan was very quiet when I first got it. I am a very light sleeper and even the smallest sounds can wake me up, and I slept through fine when the heater went off. However, about a couple weeks ago, I noticed that the fan, when especially oscillating, makes a vibrating noise. Pretty unfortunate since it makes the fan noisey now - I might have to take it apart to see if anything came loose.
Besides those two things, I really have no complaints except the shape of the heater itself. It's not symmetrical as I expect most products to be. It's really not a big deal but it might bother the odd ones like myself.
PROS:
- Tall
- Multiple settings: High, Low, Fan (although very week) and Auto (I always use this setting - heater is set to go off when the adjustable temperature is reached)
- Quiet
- Remote control - this is one of the best features
- Neat and clear blue screen
- Space-efficient
CONS:
- Wasn't in 100% prestine condition when I first got it.
- Something came loose and now makes a vibrating noise only after 2 months of use.
- Fan is weak - I can't feel any cool air unless I'm directly in front of it.
Overall, I would recommend that other people who don't want a stubby heater like the SH-1508 should get the SH-1509. It's pretty much the same fan around the same price but taller. If it weren't for the vibrating noise that suddenly happened, I'd give it five stars.

I must have gotten my first Calphalon anodized aluminum cookware (Commercial Aluminum Cookware Company, Toledo, OH) from the commercial restaurant suppliers on the Bowery in NYC 30 years ago. This is the best professional pan for searing meat or vegetables quickly and without getting the product soggy or overcooked. I translate all the old-fashion oven recipes (Greek, Czech, German, etc etc) into a Japanese style quick sear for the meat, then removing the meat, slowly cooking the more fragile ingredients and sauce making, replacing meat later for controlled simmering.
Fast searing, slow simmering--no better pan in the world for convenient one-pot cooking--asian style, sort of. Calphalon anodized aluminum is almost intelligent--the best cookware material. And I have used them all, full copper, stainless-clad copper and aluminum, and iron. My old 3-quart saute pan is so precious to me, I'm buying a new one, just to have in my kitchen.

We've been looking to replace our stainless for a few years now, patiently waiting for the right set that balanced style, features, durability and value. It was tough as most of the sets we liked were very expensive - $20+ per place setting. We thought about a Mikasa set that is made in Korea, but we were not sold on the style and they were made of 18/8 steel; a lesser grade of stainless.
We came across this set of Oneida at a local department store for $150 for the 12 piece setting. We agreed that it was the set we were looking for but we came home to see if it was available at amazon.com.
We were delighted to find it at 1/3 lower cost - what a great buy! They arrived today and we could not be happier. 18/10 (same as the $20+ sets) and the same weight as well.

I purchased this set on clearance from Sears and was pretty excited since we have another knife set by Chicago cutlery that has been very good to us. I'm not so pleased with these. they are great looking and the blades are super sharp, but from the first wash I had knives rusting in spots that I cannot figure out how to remove. They were washed by hand and allowed to air dry, so I'm not sure if this is the cause, but I'd say 4 knives out of the set have had this problem. I wasn't aware stainless steel was supposed to rust.

Cuts like a Samurai blade quality, and doesn't need to steel as frequent as the Henckels/ Wusthof knives. It has excellent weight for a medium sized hand. However, the handles get quite slippery when wet, so keep your hands clean and dry while using this knife for safety.
