The numbers 18/0 and 18/8 refer to the percentage of content of chromium and nickel. To be classified as stainless steel, the metal must contain at least 11% chromium (no nickel required). Stainless steel used in cookware is normally 18% chromium and 8% to 10% nickel.
Low end stainless steel cookware, mixing bowls, stockpots and accessories are usually 18/0, which are usually not highly polished, and could be subject to some rust spotting.

(More customer reviews)I had the same two similar looking sets of flatware for the past 15 years or so that I bought when I first moved away from home. They were cheap and lightweight and I did not know anything better existed until a friend of ours began letting us use his home down in the Keys. He has Oneida flatware in the house and the two times we went I took notice of their weight, balance and sturdiness, not to mention they were attractive on the table. I finally decided to see what was the big deal about expensive flatware. I found out when they arrived. Mercer is not the top of the line for Oneida, but it's very well made and durable and very attractive. I like the part shiny part satin handle. They hold up well in the dishwasher so far. They take up more room in the drawer because they are much thicker than my old raggedy flatware. I love them and highly recommend this brand of flatware. Remember to wait for the best sale or clearance and use coupons!

(More customer reviews)We've been looking to replace our stainless for a few years now, patiently waiting for the right set that balanced style, features, durability and value. It was tough as most of the sets we liked were very expensive - $20+ per place setting. We thought about a Mikasa set that is made in Korea, but we were not sold on the style and they were made of 18/8 steel; a lesser grade of stainless.
We came across this set of Oneida at a local department store for $150 for the 12 piece setting. We agreed that it was the set we were looking for but we came home to see if it was available at amazon.com.
We were delighted to find it at 1/3 lower cost - what a great buy! They arrived today and we could not be happier. 18/10 (same as the $20+ sets) and the same weight as well.

(More customer reviews)This is the classiest flatware I have seen in along time! Hopefully they will get the picture on here soon. I think it is very Frank Lloyd Wright looking. Very elegant and formal looking (although I intend on using for everyday use.) Heavy weight stainless, clean lines, and the glossy against matte finish make this a great contemporary choice. This is not your Mom's boring silverware!
