It has the Japanese angle (which I believe is a 15 degree compared to German much more abrupt), so it is very very sharp. It's ready to use straight out of the box, but you might want to give it a rinse to get any packaging gunk off of it. It uses great steel, and I grew up using a lot of different hunting knives, so I care a lot about the quality and grade of steel that is used. This is a very light and well balanced knife as well. I highly recommend this knife if you want to break away from the heavier German knives.
